Immersions

When I start a painting, I do not know what the end result will be. I have a mental image of colours and shapes, an energetic sense and an idea of scale. But as I begin the process of building up layers, observing and responding to what is already there, I lose my original idea and become immersed in the painting. The process of painting, for me, is a dialogue with the materiality of the artwork itself. The paint, the medium, the surface and myself are all in conversation, trying to figure each other out. The outcome of that conversation is the painting.
