I am in the process of developing what might become a new series of work, and at least a new way of looking at paintings. I’ve been thinking about archaeology and process, free-flow vs control, surface vs objecthood. I’ve been looking at old works, unfinished pieces, and pieces that didn’t quite work. Rather than continuing to paint onto them or destroy them, I am working into them. Cutting into them with chisels, and using the blade as a form of paint brush. I am creating new compositions in response to what is already there on the surface, whilst simultaneously creating something new by exploring what is underneath. I’m thinking about collage, and maybe this idea will extend to works on paper and canvas. Let’s see…
