Fragments and Traces: Embodied encounters

Fragments and Traces: Embodied Encounters, 10 mins 40 seconds, (2025)

This film is a re-edit of 4 short videos originally produced for a virtual exhibition “Making Connections: Artistic Research Across Borders” (Choreographic Research Aotearoa [University of Auckland] + Mapping Future Imaginaries Network [RMIT University, Australia]).

The film is a response to the visual and sonic textures of my neighbourhood in North-East London. The Manor House Warehouse District, Woodberry Down Estate and my studio in Bow. Everyday geometries of road sides and interconnecting tree branches are cut and layered with images of my paintings and drawings, aerial maps and imagery from an MRI scan of my knee. Details of my paintings, drawings, videos and field recordings are woven into a multi-layered audio-visual environment.

The work explores the relationship between body and space through fragments of embodied experience. It encapsulates how the physical process of making art about everyday encounters taps into a deeper understanding of the relationships between bodies and the spaces we exist in.

The original version of this work was presented in a virtual exhibition space, where visitors navigated different rooms with avatars, and could click on each video separately to create their own narrative structure. This re-edited version is my own interpretation of the story.
